Mission Statement           

The purpose of the counseling department of Rich South High School is to help students reach their potential by providing a program designed to facilitate the educational, career and social/emotional needs of students.

The primary responsibilities of counselors are to meet the developmental needs of all students and respond to the academic and social/emotional needs of individual students.  This is accomplished by counseling students, consulting with staff, parents and community members as well as integrating the school’s guidance curriculum (HORIZON) into the instructional program.  The counselors actively assist students in acquiring facts in order for students to make responsible decisions. Parents and the community are kept informed of programs and are encouraged to participate in the development of students.

Our comprehensive program consists of:

  • Guidance Curriculum – the use of the HORIZON program to empower students with awareness and skill development needed in everyday life.  Counselors are involved in an assortment of services including but not limited to:
    1. Testing awareness
    2. Academic course planning and progress review; academic intervention
    3. Social/emotional/behavioral intervention
    4. Personal, social and career development
    5. College/Post-secondary planning

  • Individual Planning – counselors assist student in monitoring and understanding their own development.  Student planning and goal setting will be addressed in the following areas:                       
    • Educational:
      1. Review of study skills
      2. Development of four year plan
      3. Review of standardized test scores
      4. Small group meeting to discuss decision making and problem solving
      5. Skills, self-confidence development
      6. Motivational strategies; communication skills review

  • In conjunction with the Career Resource Specialist, focus is placed upon:
    • Career Development:
      1. Knowledge of career opportunities
      2. Career and technical training
      3. Employment expectations

  • System Support – includes program and support activities to assist the efforts of teachers, staff, parents and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, and personal/social development of students.  Services include:
    • Teacher/administration consultation
    • School improvement planning
    • Feeder school articulation
    • Parent education seminars
